Beer of the Week: Shipyard Pumpkinhead

10/26/2012

Picture
Description: The beer tastes like pumpkin pie by itself, but order a 'drunken pumpkin' at a bar and you will be blown out of the water (and get drunk very fast).

What you should know: This beer is much more enjoyable when drank from a cinnamon sugar-rimmed glass, and the drunken pumpkin adds a shot of Stoli Vanilla, which just puts it over the top. You will inevitably black out from drinking those.

Cons: Nothing against this beer, but the rest of Shipyard's beers are just awful.

Recommendations: It doesn't need to be a Shipyard, but find a bar with pumpkin beer on tap, and get yourself a drunken pumpkin with a rimmed glass. Find someone who isn't drinking these to hang out with, so someone can tell you what you did. You won't be able to remember much after a few of these.

400th Special Beer of the Week: Magic Hat Heart of Darkness

Picture
Description: This is a nice, dark, creamy stout that has an obvious coffee flavor up front, and finishes with hints of chocolate.

What you should know: his one appears to be Magic Hat's winter seasonal beer, so you should be seeing it soon right next to #9 at your favorite beer store.

Cons: "winter seasonal"

Recommendations: Pour this one into a glass. Stouts are much better when enjoyed through a creamy head. Nothing better than licking that stout mustache when you're done.

Beer of the Week: Dogfish Head Namaste

Description: The bottle says it all: coriander, orange, and lemon. Dogfish added lemon to the standard Belgian Witbier, and it really sets it apart from the rest in its style.

What you should know: This is a limited release, so you should get one soon if you can.

Cons: Price: I paid $10.99 for a 25 ounce bottle of this stuff, but it was worth it.

Recommendations: Use Dogfish Head's Fish Finder on their website to track down where you will be able to buy this brew.

Beer of the Week: Kona Pipeline Porter

Picture
Description: This beer is pitch black, but it is not as thick as you would expect. The chocolate flavor pairs with the coffee to make as good of a porter as you'll ever drink. It has all the flavor of a sipper, but its surprisingly light body means you could drink a bunch of them quickly if you wanted to, and who wouldn't.

What you should know: This is the rare full flavored, truly outstanding beer that comes in a standard 6-pack.

Cons: "Limited Release"

Recommendations: Stock up on these while you can. Who knows when stores will run out of them. Otherwise, you might have to wait until next year, if it is even released again.
