Night Shift Brewing

Everett, MA (We've had too many of these. See pages 2 and 3)
Pete - This brewery is a scene. I've been there a bunch of times. Get there before 2pm if you go on Saturday if you want to be skip the line (especially if it's nice out). It's a very popular thing to do in the area, especially when it's warm out, as they have an outdoor area. They have ~15 beers on tap and offer flights ($8 for 4 as of this writing). They have a range of styles, including multiple IPA's and sours at all times. Their outdoor area has a food truck (check the schedule) so you're guaranteed some good food. There are various board games available to play, as well as cornhole. They also sell beer to go. Feel free to check out Bone Up and Short Path Distillery down the street while you're there too.

Night Shift Albert
Saison - 5.8% ABV
Pete
Pictured on the left. Pretty mild, forgettable saison. One of those ones that if you get in a flight, it'll be gone rather quickly but with nothing noteworthy that stuck in your mind.

Picture
Night Shift Apple Brandy Barrel Aged El Lechedor
Imperial Stout - 10.5% ABV
Pete
Amazing beer. So much going on. Creamy, spicy, rich, and with a sweet booziness from the apple brandy (and the booze). Better than the original.

Picture
Night Shift Arnie
Saison - 7% ABV
Pete
Supposed to be like an Arnold Palmer. I get the tea flavor (presumably from the kombucha), but I don't really get any lemon. It's basically mild carbonated iced tea.

Picture
Night Shift Astro Lounge
American IPA - 5.9% ABV
Pete
Pictured on the right. Very tasty, super grassy IPA. Questionable that it's super grassy and the name made me immediately think of AstroTurf, which was highly criticized for being nothing like grass, but that's neither here nor there.

Ratings: Pete - 5 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Awake
Porter - 6.7% ABV
Pete
Really good coffee beer. It is bitter and a little bit rich, like a nice dark roast. Drinking this tricked my body into thinking I was amped like I'd be if I had a coffee during a long night of drinking, just because it felt like I was drinking one.

Ratings: Pete - 5 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Bean Porter
Porter - 7.7% ABV
Pete
Great vanilla-y porter. It smells boozy, but doesn't really taste boozy. Probably the bourbon.

Ratings: Pete - 5 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Beer Mine
Pastry Stout - 8.4% ABV
Pete
Lots of raspberry flavor, a tiny bit of chocolate, and an incredibly light body for a stout. Not terribly sweet.

Ratings: Pete - 4 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Bennington
Oatmeal Stout - 7% ABV
Pete
Pretty good oatmeal stout. It's nice and creamy with a hint of chocolate. Unfortunately, like most actual oatmeal (though not most oatmeal stouts), there just isn't enough flavor here.

Ratings: Pete - 4 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Birthday Brownie
Stout - 7.1% ABV
Pete
Really, really fudgy. No complaints here.

Ratings: Pete - 5 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Blossom Weisse
Berliner Weisse - 4.9% ABV
Pete
Pictured front left. Great sour here. Super sour with a hint of cherry sweetness to balance it just a little.

Ratings: Pete - 5 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Boysen Weisse
Berliner Weisse - 4.3% ABV
Pete
Awesome beer. The bright red color is deceiving. This isn't really fruity. It has a nice hint of fruit, but it's mostly just very sour going down with a hint of salt in the finish. Really, really good.

Ratings: Pete - 6 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Bramble Weisse
Berliner Weisse - 5% ABV
Pete
This is an amazing sour. It is perfectly balanced between tart and fruity from the raspberries. Delicious.

Ratings: Pete - 6 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Bretter Together
Brett IPA - 6.6% ABV
Pete
Pretty solid beer. Aggressively Brett flavor, so dry and yeasty. If you're a Brett fan, this really highlights it. I'm more of a fan of it as an accent, but this is still good.

Ratings: Pete - 4 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Briar Weisse
Berliner Weisse - 5.4% ABV
Pete
Above average sour level (though lower than I'm used to from Night Shift). Definitely can taste both the blackberry and the lemon. Really good. It's the bright red one in the photo.

Ratings: Pete - 5 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Buzz
Imperial IPA - 8.5% ABV
Pete
Everything you could possibly want in a beer. It's not bitter at all, despite its style. It does have all the citrusy flavor you could possibly want. Tropical fruit dominates, with maybe some peach in there. If you can find this, get it.

Ratings: Pete - 6 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Cassandre
Saison - 4.3% ABV
Pete
Pictured in the front, 2nd from the left. It's easy to drink, but pretty flavorless.

Ratings: Pete - 3 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Chance the DIPA
Imperial New England IPA - 8% ABV
Pete
Pictured on the right. This has some good fruitiness to it, but it's also a little boozy and sweet. It's good, but it needs a bit more flavor to hide the booze level.

Ratings: Pete - 4 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Chocolate Bridge
Imperial Milk Stout - 8.1% ABV
Pete
This is one of those beers that's pretty good, and you end up drinking it fast, but then don't really remember what it tastes like. It's smooth, balanced, and pretty easy to drink given its style, just doesn't blow you away with flavor.

Ratings: Pete - 4 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Citranation
Belgian IPA - 7.9% ABV
Pete
Pictured on the left. Very good beer. You get some of the citrus hoppy flavor from the hops, with a definitive Belgian flavor that dominates.

Ratings: Pete - 4 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Coburg
Doppelbock - 7.7% ABV
Pete
Pretty good beer. It has some maltiness and a boozy backbone. Really lets you know you're drinking alcohol.

Ratings: Pete - 4 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Cow Tipper
Milk Stout - 6% ABV
Pete
Exactly what you expect from a milk stout. It's pretty sweet, a little rich, but not too bad. Hint of chocolate. Delicious.

Ratings: Pete - 5 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Craigerator II: Pool Party
IPA - 5.3% ABV
Pete
Very good, very citrusy IPA. It tastes like the color makes it look like it should taste.

Ratings: Pete - 5 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Cranagram
New England IPA - 6.3% ABV
Pete
Pictured on the left. Lots of cranberry flavor - some bitterness from that. Pretty solid IPA.

Ratings: Pete - 4 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Cryoblast
Imperial New England IPA - 9% ABV
Pete
Pictured on the right. Intensely earthy flavor with a little creaminess in the finish.

Ratings: Pete - 4 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Crystal Palace
West Coast IPA - 6.5% ABV
Pete
Pretty solid, fairly bitter, and a slightly dry finish.

Ratings: Pete - 4 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Cul-de-sac
Cream Ale - 5.4% ABV
Pete
Pictured 2nd from the right. Surprisingly (for me) good, as I'm not a cream ale guy. It just tastes like hops, so I can't complain.

Ratings: Pete - 4 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Dalí
Saison - 5.2% ABV
Pete
Pictured 2nd from right. Tastes almost like a bière de garde. It's got spiciness from the yeast, but also almost a champagne-y flavor. Pretty solid.

Ratings: Pete - 4 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Dank U, Next
American Pale Ale - 5.4% ABV
Pete
Really excellent pale ale. Pictured on the left. It has a pretty unassuming look, fairly pale and light-bodied, but the flavor is very in your face. Tons of pine, a little lemon. Honestly, didn't get much more than a hint of dank, but it's still a damn good beer.

Ratings: Pete - 6 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Darkling 2019
Imperial Stout - 12.9% ABV
Pete
This is the 2019 version (my first foray). Imperial stout aged in bourbon and Short Path apple brandy barrels. Sounded great to me. Smell is ultra boozy. Taste is not, with a huge chocolate backbone and some fruitiness in the finish. Really good beer.

Ratings: Pete - 5 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Dibs
Imperial Stout - 12.4% ABV
Pete
3rd from the left in the picture. It's very strong and it smells like it. Extremely rich going down, just tastes like you're drinking melted dark chocolate.

Ratings: Pete - 4 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Dole Berliner
Berliner Weisse - 4.6% ABV
Pete
Pictured on the right. Incredible name for a banana sour. The banana is there, but it's a subtle flavor, so it really lets the sourness shine in this one. Great beer.

Ratings: Pete - 5 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Doré
Grisette - 5% ABV
Pete
Pictured on the left. Easy drinker with a refreshing kick. Smells exactly like it tastes. The description of the beer at the brewery is on point: zesty, floral, easy drinker. Can't say it much better myself.

I changed my rating after having this a 2nd time. I was sick the 1st time and couldn't smell, which apparently takes a lot away from this one.

Ratings: Pete - 5 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Duchamp
Saison - 5.1% ABV
Pete
Nice combo of sour and spicy that I've only had once or twice before. This is the best sour saison I've had.

Ratings: Pete - 5 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Dunkel John's Band
Munich Dunkel Lager - 5% ABV
Pete
Pictured on the right. I was expecting/hoping for more roasty malty flavors. Pretty light beer without much flavor.

Ratings: Pete - 3 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Dynasty
Imperial Stout - 11.5% ABV
Pete
Pictured on the right. Nice and chocolatey, pretty rich going down but not too crazy. It also has a hint of bitter in the finish that balances the chocolate well.

Ratings: Pete - 5 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift El Lechedor 2017
Imperial Milk Stout - 9.3% ABV
Pete
Boozy first, then a little bit creamy, then a little bit spicy. There's a lot going on with this one, and it works.

Ratings: Pete - 5 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift El Lechedor Cacao & Chili
Imperial Milk Stout - 10.3% ABV
Pete
This is what I want in a chili beer. It's got the spice, but it's not so hot that it overwhelms. You still get the sweet milk stout and chocolate flavors. Great beer. Pictured top left.

Ratings: Pete - 5 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift El Lechedor Maple
Imperial Milk Stout - 10.3% ABV
Pete
This tastes like the end of a bourbon glass that took too long to drink, and the ice cubes were really small and melted into it. So yeah, whiskey water. Pictured on the left 2nd from the top.

Ratings: Pete - 3 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Embark IPA
IPA - 5.4% ABV
Pete
This was OK going down, had a slightly off finish, and then had a horrible taste that came in afterwards.

Ratings: Pete - 2 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Equal Pay, Equal Play
New England Pale Ale - 4.7% ABV
Pete
Pictured in the back. Something a bit off about this one. It's got some dank to it, but also some off flavors. Still not bad, as enough dank hops come through to make it solid. Feels like this was named wrong too. Shouldn't it be Equal Play, Equal Pay, or Equal Pay FOR Equal Pay? Questionable execution.

Ratings: Pete - 3 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Ever Weisse
Berliner Weisse - 3.1% ABV
Pete
This is just too sour. Not a lot of alcohol, and you can't really drink it at any sort of pace, because it is just so sour. It has some nice flavor, but it's too much.

Ratings: Pete - 3 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Everglow
IPA - 5.9% ABV
Pete
Awesome IPA. Smells tropical, and the flavor backs it up, staying with you a bit after you put it down.

Ratings: Pete - 5 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift First Night
Brut IPA - 3.6% ABV
Pete
Solid beer with a little funk. Very dry, tons of carbonation. Not a ton of flavor, but easy to drink. That's the style I guess. Wouldn't mind a little more booze. Pictured 2nd from the bottom in the middle (the one that looks super carbonated).

Ratings: Pete - 4 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Fixed Wing
Fruit Beer - 6.1% ABV
Pete
This has some weird ingredients (butterfly pea flower?). It's a little sweet, but not overbearing by any means. It's quite light. Realistically, just not a lot of flavor, but it's fairly strong, so there's that.

Ratings: Pete - 4 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Fluffier
Imperial New England IPA - 8.5% ABV
Pete
Super citrusy, pretty creamy, and missing the excess sweetness that the superlative version had. Great beer.

Ratings: Pete - 5 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Fluffiest
Imperial New England IPA - 9.7% ABV
Pete
Smells super super creamy, and it definitely comes off that way while drinking. It has some citrus also. It's just a tiny bit too sweet, as most IPA's that are this strong tend to get. Just a little too much alcohol in this one, hard to hide that much malt in an IPA.

Ratings: Pete - 4 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Fluffinity
New England IPA - 7% ABV
Pete
Pictured on the left. A little bitter (like citrus pithy) and a little malty. Solid IPA, thought I wouldn't call it a New England style.

Ratings: Pete - 4 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Fluffy
IPA - 5.3% ABV
Pete
Smells absolutely amazing. So much citrus. The taste is pretty good, but disappointing compared to the smell. Still, I'd drink this anytime. Also, when I hear Fluffy, this is what comes to mind. I just thought you should know that about me if you're reading this.

Ratings: Pete - 4 Shyoh's

Picture
Night Shift Funk Renegade
Pale Ale - 5.7% ABV
Pete
Pictured on the left. It's nice going down with a little funk, but it's just too much in the finish for me to really enjoy it.
