Pure Project Brewing

San Diego, CA
Pete - Pure has a few locations in the SD area. I went to the one in Carlsbad while on vacation, and I went twice in a week, in addition to a quick stop to grab cans to go. That's how good it was. I went Saturday at 11am and Friday at 230pm. They have a cool space and supposedly there's usually a food truck outside, though not while I was there. They offer full pours and flights, as well as cans and merch to go. Their sours and 'murky' AKA New England IPA's are their best stuff. I suggest avoiding the imperial stouts - they just aren't worth it.

Pure Project Beast Below
Imperial Stout - 11.6% ABV
Pete
Pictured on the right. Collaboration with North Park. The coffee flavor balances this a little bit, but like other Pure stouts, it's too sweet. The coffee, chocolate, and banana flavors are nice, just too sweet.

Picture
Pure Project Cashwood
Pale Ale - 5.4% ABV
Pete
Pictured on the left. Unique cryo hop smell and flavor. It tastes like raw hops smell. Solid.

Ratings: Pete - 4 Shyoh's

Picture
Pure Project Cloud Mountain
Imperial New England IPA - 8.5% ABV
Pete
Really good NEIPA. Super creamy, but a slightly dry finish. No one flavor stands out, but what's here comes together well.

Ratings: Pete - 5 Shyoh's

Picture
Pure Project Dankness Rising
Imperial IPA - 8.3% ABV
Pete
Pictured in the middle. Collaboration with Cellarmaker. This is a damn good IPA with a lot going on. Dank is definitely front and center, but it also has a little sweetness creeping in (just enough to be a positive without going overboard), and just enough bitterness to remind you that you're drinking an IPA on the west coast. One of the best I've had of this style.

Picture
Pure Project Déjà Fruit
Saison - 6% ABV
Pete
Pictured 2nd from the right. This looks unassuming, smells super sour, and the flavor is an excellent balance of tart, funk, and fruit.

Picture
Pure Project Ember Song
Oud Bruin - 7.2% ABV
Pete
Pictured on the right. Pretty funky, a little malty, some smokey flavor comes through, but I don't get any vanilla.

Picture
Pure Project Endless Vista
Imperial New England IPA - 8.3% ABV
Pete
Pictured in the middle. Super creamy, which kind of overwhelms the flavor. Some nice zestiness does come through in the finish.

Picture
Pure Project Euphorik w/Strawberries
Wild Ale - 7% ABV
Pete
Pictured in the middle. Pretty funky and sour with strawberry shortcake vibes. Yum.

Picture
Pure Project Force of Nature
New England IPA - 6.5% ABV
Pete
Pictured on the left. Damn good dry and dank IPA.

Picture
Pure Project Forest Guardian
Imperial New England IPA - 9.5% ABV
Pete
Always a risk for me to get an IPA this strong, as most are to sweet for me. This is most definitely not that. Super creamy and smooth, and resin/dankness is the prevailing flavor. Tons of flavors going on from the wide variety of hops. Note that my judgment was clouded when I had this, as I was 3 beers in and hadn't had a meal in 24 hours.

Picture
Pure Project Formless Reflections
New England IPA - 6.9% ABV
Pete
Nice and creamy. It doesn't look as hazy as others but definitely tastes it. The citrus is mellow but it's there and it's delicious.

Picture
Pure Project Intuitive Knowledge
Sour - 7.5% ABV
Pete
Collaboration with Mission-Trail (haven't had any of those as of 8/30/21). Pictured on the right. Super sour but also syrupy fruity. Pretty intense on both sides, and I love that.

Picture
Pure Project La Luna
Imperial New England IPA - 10.1% ABV
Pete
Very good for a triple. A little boozy but not crazy sweet. The dominant flavor is peppery-ness.

Picture
Pure Project Lief 2021
Lambic - 7% ABV
Pete
Pictured 2nd from the left. Unreal beer. Crisp, slightly funky, and pretty darn sour.

Ratings: Pete - 6 Shyoh's

Picture
Pure Project Lief 2022
Lambic - 7% ABV
Pete
Pictured 2nd from the right. Really good - the sourness is there along with a little bit of funk. I wanted the flavors a little more amped up, but it's still damn good.

Ratings: Pete - 5 Shyoh's

Picture
Pure Project Log Cabin Blanton's #2 Barrel
Imperial Stout - 11.3% ABV
Pete
Boozy and sweet with some subtle spice. Solid beer, but I wanted it a little less sweet.

Ratings: Pete - 4 Shyoh's

Picture
Pure Project Milagro
Irish Dry Stout - 5.3% ABV
Pete
Pictured on the left. This is a great easy-drinking stout with a little more vanilla flavor than others of the style.

Ratings: Pete - 5 Shyoh's

Picture
Pure Project Murkwood
New England IPA - 7% ABV
Pete
Pictured 2nd from the left. I loved this. Definitely the best NEIPA I've had on the west coast. Super hazy looking, obviously, with plenty of citrus and a dank finish.

Ratings: Pete - 6 Shyoh's

Picture
Pure Project Nomad
Hefeweizen - 5.7% ABV
Pete
Pictured on the left. Amped up hefe - flavors of banana and lemon come through quite a bit. Damn good.

Ratings: Pete - 5 Shyoh's

Picture
Pure Project Phantom Undertow
Imperial Stout - 11.2% ABV
Pete
Pictured on the right. Pretty sweet, but dark chocolate and coffee flavors dominate, making the sweetness more palatable.

Ratings: Pete - 4 Shyoy's

Picture
Pure Project Phuture 1
New England IPA - 6.5% ABV
Pete
Pictured 2nd from the left. Collaboration with North Park and Harland. Creamy and quite dank with some lime. Love this.

Ratings: Pete - 5 Shyoh's

Picture
Pure Project Pure West
West Coast IPA - 6.5% ABV
Pete
Pictured 2nd from the left. I like this a lot. It has the bitterness and the earthiness of a west coast IPA without any of the maltiness.

Ratings: Pete - 5 Shyoh's

Picture
Pure Project Retrograde Motion
Imperial New England IPA - 8.5% ABV
Pete
Pictured on the left. Definitely super tropical. Comes off a little sweet and coconut-y to me. It's not a bad beer, just not my favorite flavors.

Ratings: Pete - 4 Shyoh's

Picture
Pure Project Roes Red
Flanders Red - 7% ABV
Pete
Pictured 2nd from the right. This is awesome and an underused style. Pretty sour with a hint of funk and some fruity sweetness. I didn't taste cherry specifically, which is good news for me since I tend not to love cherry beers.

Ratings: Pete - 6 Shyoh's

Picture
Pure Project Sakura
IPA - 6.8% ABV
Pete
Collaboration with Pizza Port. Solid - nothing amazing but a nice balanced light body IPA.

Ratings: Pete - 4 Shyoh's

Picture
Pure Project Sapphire Dust
New England IPA - 6.9% ABV
Pete
2nd from the left. Interesting combination of zesty/earthy and strawberry flavors. They're good flavors, but they clash a little.

Ratings: Pete - 4 Shyoh's

Picture
Pure Project Tropical Nightfall
Imperial Stout - 11.6% ABV
Pete
Pictured 2nd from the right. This is horrible. Tastes like pure alcohol. None of the typical stout flavors come through at all, just booze. I finished my taster, but you shouldn't.

Ratings: Pete - 1 Shyoh

Picture
Pure Project Zigsa
New England IPA - 6.3% ABV
Pete
Another great beer. A little creamy but fairly light body despite the look of the beer. Lots of flavor, especially for the relatively low ABV. Nice balance between citrus and peppery notes.
